Spain is currently ranked 6th in the world according to FIFA’s official World Rankings. After making 14 World Cup finals appearances, Spain won the tournament only once, in 2010 (South Africa). Spain booked their World Cup finals spot by topping Group G in the qualification group.

Group B

Spain has been drawn in group B for the World Cup in Russia, 2018 along with Portugal, Iran and Morocco. The key game that will determine how this group will end will be the game between the European heavyweights, Spain versus Portugal in Sochi. Portugal qualified by winning EURO UEFA in 2016.

Random Fact: Iran was the third team (after Russia and Brazil) to qualify for the World Cup 2018.

Key Players

Spain’s squad boasts of players such as Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, David de Gea, Iker Casillas, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata, Isco, David Silva, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Pedro, Mata, Koke, Azpilicueta, Asencio, Bellerin, Herrera and Co.

Fact: David Villa is Spain’s leading all-time goal scorer with 9 goals in 3 World Cup Finals. Also, Casillas won the Golden Glove award for Spain in 2010.

Expected Finish

Spain should be favorites to top the group and qualify for the next round. Portugal will be favorites to finish the group as runners-up in the group and qualify as well. Iran and Morocco are decent teams as well and could cause an upset or force a draw in their games.

Spain will be expected to reach the semi-finals this World Cup in Russia. If Spain top’s their group as anticipated, then they would get a relatively easier draw in the round of 16. This would enhance their chances of progressing in the World Cup. Spain can go on to win the World Cup too. But I don’t see them outplaying teams like Brazil, Germany, France and the likes.

Spain is at 8/1 odds to win the World Cup.
