Demystifying Betting Algorithms: A Comprehensive Guide

Betting algorithms are part of the tech craze that is artificial intelligence and computer-aided automation. For this reason, these algorithms are not everyone’s cup of tea. Many people do not understand what they are and how to apply to betting or anything else. That will not deter the growth of the betting software space, however. Their successful and profitable application of computer algorithms to other industries like finance and forex has people trying to transfer the same to betting and gambling. Blockchain and cryptocurrency, too, were regarded as passing internet fads upon their launching. Now, blockchain could form a critical part of the infrastructure of every major online casino in the next five years, and there are many casinos, as of 2022, that only accept crypto deposits. This post aims to give a foundational understanding of betting algorithms and how they may be applied to the ever-dynamic world of sports betting.

Betting Algorithms?

An algorithm is a step-by-step way of solving a problem. A computer algorithm applies complex mathematical formulae to process collected data and use it to solve complex problems. In the betting world, there’s, of course, no problem more testing than reliably predicting the outcome of sporting events. The result could be as simple: from who wins a match to something as intricate as which team scores more goals and at what times during a game.

Which Data Do Betting Algorithms Use?

Quality sports data is essential for an algorithm to produce reliable predictions. Let’s use the most popular sport in the world and betting - soccer - as an example. Some of the data used might be soccer metrics like the team’s:

  • Last ten results

  • Team’s previous five performances at home

  • Team’s previous five versions away

  • Total goals scored in the previous ten matches.

  • Total of goals conceded in the last ten matches.

  • First-half goals scored in the previous ten matches.

  • Total second-half goals scored last ten matches.

  • Top scorer

  • Win percentage when the leading scorer plays

  • Win percentage when the leading scorer does not play

  • Expected Goals (xG) last five matches

  • Expected Goals (xG) versus actual goals scored in previous five matches.

  • And so much more.

The unique data points an algorithm receives, the better the quality of the predictions it can provide. Thankfully, much sports data is widely available in the public realm, meaning that betting algorithm programmers are complete in the inputs they need.

Advantages Of Betting Algorithms

Betting algorithms are not a widely used tool in sports betting yet. But those technophiles who are already in on the technology will tell you that:

  • Computer algorithms are much quicker than the human mind digesting sports statistics.

  • Computers never get tired. You can use sports betting software to analyze thousands of sporting events in a minute.

  • Computer algorithms produce more accurate results than even the best human mind.

The human mind makes emotional decisions that may not always be prudent in a betting scenario. It is not a problem you would have with computers. The edge that betting algorithms provide for punters can ultimately help them generate more revenue from their sports betting business. As such, it is a tool that every professional sports gambler should seriously consider investing in. The drawback, however, is that most of the better betting software/algorithms come at a premium, requiring substantial investment that a fledgling gambler may not be able to afford. Additionally, bookmakers are using their algorithms to analyze bettor’s behavior. Only time will tell who can come up with the better ones!
