Group A would seem like one of the relatively easy groups in the 2018 World Cup draw. The host nation, Russia, has been drawn in group A. The other teams in this group include Uruguay, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. When you combine FIFA rankings based on the points each team has, Group A is by far the weakest group in the lot with 2991 points. The other groups fall within the 3900-4200 point range.
- Saudi Arabia
Russia qualified automatically as the host nation for the 2018 World Cup. Uruguay qualified as one of the top four teams to get an automatic qualification from the CONEMBOL in South America. Egypt qualified as group E winners from the CAF in Africa. Saudi Arabia qualified for the World Cup after finishing as Group B runners-up in the Asian qualification.
Expected Group Results
- Saudi Arabia
Uruguay should top the group (easily) with Suarez, Cavani, Godin and co. helping the country qualify for the next round (round of 16). Egypt has an in-form Mo Salah who can help carry the team to the next round by finishing as runners-up in the group. Russia and Egypt will fight for the coveted runners-up position in the group. Egypt should have the edge over Russia. If Saudi get any points from this group, it would be a successful World Cup campaign for them.
Bookies feel that Uruguay will progress through with ease. Russia will also qualify from the group with better odds than Egypt. Saudi Arabia has the odds stacked against them for qualification. The odds for group A of the FIFA World Cup 2018 are:
- Uruguay – 6/5
- Russia – 7/4
- Egypt – 6/1
- Saudi Arabia – 40/1
